Fed: RSL chief saddened about Gallipoli order
RSL national president BILL CREWS says it's sad that fears of a terrorist attack have
led to a ban on defence personnel going to Gallipoli on their holidays to commemorate
Anzac Day.
The Sun-Herald says Defence Force chief General PETER COSGROVE has ordered no leave
be approved for travel to places deemed dangerous by the government, including Turkey.
At least two senior army officers have been ordered to cancel privately organised trips
to Gallipoli in Turkey.
Major General CREWS says the defence force has a duty of care to its personnel, but
it's sad that terrorist fears are preventing people from making the pilgrimage.
He intends to make his first trip to Gallipoli next year on the 90th anniversary of the battle.
Defence Minister ROBERT HILL will represent the Australian government at this year's service.
