QLD:Katter stands by name despite rejection
By Kym Agius
BRISBANE, Aug 23 AAP - Federal MP Bob Katter won't stop using The Australian Party
as an abbreviation in public for his political party despite the Australian Electoral
Commission rejecting it.
The AEC knocked back an application to register Katter's Australian Party on August
17 because The Australian Party abbreviation was likely to be mistaken for, or confused
with, an already registered name or abbreviation.
Mr Katter said the party had withdrawn the abbreviation and is now awaiting approval
from the AEC to be known as Katter's Australian Party.
But he said it won't stop the party calling itself The Australian Party in public.
Queensland leader and Beaudesert MP Aidan McLindon said he was also "very comfortable"
casually referring to the party as The Australian Party, despite the ruling.
Meanwhile, the pair have warned potential candidates not to sign up if they don't believe
in the party's 21 core values.
It comes after former police officer Jason Somerville said on the weekend he was dumped
after questioning the party on whether he could hold personal views on issues such as
same-sex marriage, abortion and surrogacy.
One of the core values listed on the party's website is that it is in the best social
and economic interest, and the interest of children, to uphold marriage between a man
and woman.
But although the party says modern Australia was founded on Christian values, it does
not have a stance on abortion.
"There are 21 core values and principles in this party and if the candidates don't
agree to those, then there is no point in them joining," Mr McLindon told reporters in
Brisbane.
"Outside of our core issues an values, the electorate will naturally come first."
The men also made a policy announcement on Tuesday to raise the payroll tax threshold
from $1 million to $2 million, giving 7500 small businesses a tax break at a cost of $240
million.

VIC: Truck driver to stand trial over Kerang crash
BENDIGO, Vic, Aug 18, AAP - The truck driver involved in the 2007 Victorian rail disaster
that claimed 11 lives has been ordered to stand trial.
Christiaan Scholl, 49, of Wangaratta, has been charged with 25 offences, including
11 counts of culpable driving, over the crash on June 5 last year.
The crash occurred when Scholl's semi-trailer and a Melbourne-bound V/Line passenger
train collided at a level crossing north of Kerang in northern Victoria.
Today was the third day of his committal hearing in the Bendigo Magistrates' Court.
Magistrate Bruce Cottrill today committed Mr Scholl to stand trial, ruling he was satisfied
there was enough evidence to justify a conviction in a higher court.
Scholl indicated he would plead not guilty to all charges.

FED:14-year-old Polish girl to model for Australian Fashion Week
SYDNEY, April 11 AAP - The decision to fly a 14-year-old Polish girl to Sydney to model
in Australian Fashion Week (AFW) has been defended by the event organisers.
Monika Jagaciak has previously fronted a campaign for French fashion house Hermes and
been photographed in a white swimsuit being sprayed by a shower jet.
But while AFW is promoting Jagaciak as the next big thing, underage modelling remains
a highly contentious issue.
London Fashion Week has banned under-16-year-olds from its catwalks and, in France,
a licence is required before an under-16-year-old can model.
No such licence is required in Australia, but there was a public outcry when 12-year-old
Maddison Gabriel won a Gold Coast fashion competition last year.
AFW founder Simon Lock was unrepentant about bringing Jagaciak to Australia.
"The designers love these models as coat hangers for their clothes," Mr Lock told News Limited.
"They don't want to exploit their sexuality in any way whatsoever."
AFW requires any model under school-leaving age to have written permission from their
parents and/or guardians and permission from their school principal.
Models must also be chaperoned by a representative of a reputable agency.

NSW: Armed robbery rates fall - except in Bankstown =2
The statewide rate for harassment, threatening behaviour and public nuisance rose 13
per cent, offensive conduct was up 13.1 per cent and bail breaches increased by 10.4 per
cent.
Bureau director Don Weatherburn said this was the fifth year in a row there had been
major drops in most of the major categories of property crime in NSW.
The rise in malicious damage was mainly due to an increase in recorded incidents of
graffiti, he said.
"Remember that assault and sexual assault are stable at the moment, but they have risen
over the past 10 to 15 years, so they have levelled off at a higher point," Dr Weatherburn
told reporters.
"But generally speaking things have improved again since the peak year of 2000 when
crime rates were at their worst in this state."
The rise in robbery in the Canterbury/Bankstown area was mainly attributed to a 61.3
per cent increase in robbery with a weapon not a firearm, in the suburb of Bankstown.
"That's a pretty big jump. Obviously if you're living in Bankstown it's a considerable
worry," Dr Weatherburn said.
"Obviously the police need to deal with it quickly, otherwise the problem could spread
... these are things that you don't confine to the `don't worry about' bin because they
are only happening in one area."
Despite a surge in shooting incidents in the first three months of this year, particularly
in Sydney's south-west, Dr Weatherburn said it was too early to tell if this was a permanent
trend.
"The trend in shooting incidents in the last two years has been stable and the trend
over the last five years has been down," he said.
"It's too soon to say whether that trend is going to reverse itself, January was a
terrible month for murder but the February and March figures were right on the average."
Not until June would there be a clearer indication if shooting murders were bucking
a five-year trend and increasing.

A passionate food site.(Knight Ridder Newspapers)
Site: Passionate About Food
Address: passionateaboutfood.net
Here's another entree in the endless wealth of Internet food sites, its sweep so broad you probably could live on a diet of this one alone.
Most sites like this are sponsored by food companies or conglomerates or high-profile personalities. That is not the case here.
Here you have a Bulgarian Web page designer with the patience and passion to collect up-to-date articles, news, kitchen tips and recipes on every imaginable topic, from herbs and spices to vegetarian delights.
Because we are in Rome, we might as well do as the Romans do, and home in on the best of the Bulgarian cuisine. We like the sound of the creamed zucchini soup, potato and veggie omelet and cheese-stuffed peppers, but are not inclined to try the mackerel in wine and tomato sauce (eccch!).
You are probably familiar with moussaka, the potato, meat and onion mixture served with yogurt or sour cream on the side. We've seen it made with macaroni, too. Either way, you have a hearty complement to chilly afternoons and falling leaves.

Pukka tukka on the net...
Byline: DIANA APPLEYARD
ARTIST Andy Warhol once claimed that everyone should be famous for 15 minutes. By that estimation, today's celebrity chefs have certainly had more than their fair share of the limelight.
Nigella, Delia, Gary, Jamie and co. are rarely off our screens or the bookshelves.
However, when it comes to the internet, most have enjoyed rather less than 15 minutes of glory.
That tiger of the kitchen, Gordon Ramsay, is tamed into answering questions on a website rather hilariously titled website handbag.com, And many of the others' websites are simply blatant advertisements for their restaurants, shops, cookery workshops or product endorsements.
But it's not all doom and gloom. The indefatigable Jamie Oliver's website, www.jamieoliver.net, is a joy.
Clearly written by him - no one else could take such liberties with the English language - his personality spills out from the screen.
He has even dragooned his wife Jools into writing a monthly-updated diary.
The site is well designed, with lots of recent pictures, and some good, seasonal recipes such as baked Jerusalem artichokes.
What was especially good about this site was the Kids Club feature, aimed at encouraging children to get involved with cooking.
Just wait - the 'Pukka Tukka' badges are on their way.
THE chef who comes nearest to rivalling Jamie is Nigel Slater, with his down-to-earth column on the www. femail.co.uk website, owned by the Daily Mail.
Not only does he give tasty recipes, Nigel also answers questions in a very informative way. He champions organic food, saying the difference in taste can be 'truly startling'.
Martha Stewart, the American doyenne of gracious living, is also doing her thing in cyberspace.
Log on to her website (www.martha stewart.com) and, quite frankly, you may never want to leave.
It is an entire way of life - there is simply everything on this site, from a thousand recipes to recommended holidays, gardening, crafts, chatrooms, weddings and how to care for, and dress, your baby. And everything is done with such a deceptively simple, elegant style, it's enough to make you look around your own home in dismay and take it out on the cat.
With the weather so cold, Martha suggests indoor crafts to entertain housebound children. Transform old mittens into animal puppets, create a hair ornament with twists of beads and wire, and make your own soothing lipbalm flavoured with lemon, tangerine or mint.
And then, just in case you have more time on your hands than you know what to do with, Martha will tell you how to create the perfect Barbie party for your daughter.
Of course, there is a commercial imperative behind the website - almost every idea or recipe is accompanied by a product Martha can sell you personally.
But it is all done with such style you really don't feel like you're being fleeced.
There has been talk of Nigella Lawson, author of How To Be A Domestic Goddess, launching a super-site (www. nigella.com), and I am sure that if she does, Martha Stewart is the woman to follow.
Search for Nigella on the web at the moment and you'll find a site from her Channel 4 programme Nigella Bites, featuring a handful of recipes.
The original cookery goddess, Delia Smith, features surprisingly little on the web. Type her name into Google, the search engine everyone is using, and you simply get a list of her books and videos. Informative, but rather soulless.
Meanwhile, Rick Stein has a well- designed website, which points you towards his restaurant, his seafood school, his shop, Petroc's Hotel, demonstration evenings and books.
Antony Worrall Thompson comes at you via the Great British Kitchens website, and packs in several rather tasty-looking recipes such as lamb shanks with garlic, rosemary and flageolet beans. There are lots of details about his books, but no one dedicated site.
LIKEWISE, type in Marco Pierre White and you will be directed immediately to a website dedicated to his restaurant - called, fetchingly, 'The Restaurant - and treated to a mouth-watering description of the delicious food you could eat there, if only you could afford it.
And on BBC Online, you can learn everything you ever wanted to know about spiky-haired chef Gary Rhodes, such as what he would bury in a time capsule to commemorate this century's most innovative food.
(Answer: muesli and salad cream, among other things.) But few other star chefs have made much of an impression online, and for many, the net has proved to be something of a black hole.
A site seems a great idea for promotion and marketing, but then the huge costs, and the time involved, probably make this brilliant idea seem, well, less brilliant.

BBB ALERT: THE DR. IS NOT IN!
CONWAY, S.C. -- The following information was released by the Council of Better Business Bureaus:
The Better Business Bureau of Coastal Carolina is issuing a nationwide alert to consumers regarding "Dr. Bass, LLC"[yen], an online store that sells custom built speaker cabinets based out of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The BBB has received 39 complaints against Dr. Bass since October of 2008, the majority of which allege that products are not being received. Consumers are purchasing products on the Dr. Bass website, paying for them in full, but either never received the product or they are sent a completely different product than what was ordered. Out of the total number of complaints we have processed, 28 of them have gone unanswered by the business. These complaints come to our BBB office from various states, including: SC, NC, CA, CO, NY, TX, WI, VA, FL, HI, OR, MO, MD, and Puerto Rico.
The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs office has also received 13 complaints about Dr. Bass that have gone unanswered.
"Sometimes we see this sort of thing when an internet-based business gets too big to handle"[yen], said Kathy Graham, President/CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Coastal Carolina, Inc. "The appropriate action would be for Dr. Bass to respond to consumer concerns and let the BBB work with them to help resolve the issues"[yen]. Graham continued, "Since Dr. Bass has chosen to not respond to their unhappy customers, they leave the impression of being just another scam, and that leaves a lot of frustrated and angry consumers out there with no relief in sight"[yen].
The BBB offers the following tips for consumers to protect themselves when purchasing over the Internet:
Verify the company's contact information (name, address, phone numbers) before you give out any personal information.
Read the terms and conditions carefully. If you don't understand them, ask. If you are unable to get a suitable response, don't do business with the company.
Use a credit card for your purchase instead of a debit card. Debit cards take money out of your checking account, immediately.
If a pop-up appears after purchasing an item, read the box carefully to see how you can close it out without agreeing to a purchase.
The mission of the Better Business Bureau is to promote, through self-regulation, the highest standards of business ethics and conduct, and to instill confidence in responsible businesses through programs of education and action that inform, protect and assist the general public. Heats are riding high after signing up LeBron James last year. Dallas Mavericks too aren't any pushovers with many of their players in top form in recent games. The first game, which was easily taken by the Heat was exciting but game 2 was more exciting. Game two was taken by the Mavericks in a somewhat dramatic way; the Mavs rallied from a 15-point deficit during the fourth quarter to clench the win.
Although Mavericks' star player Dirk Nowitzki was suffering from a minor injury in his left middle finger, he was able to lead his team to victory with 24 points. The win was quite dramatic because the winning goal was made by Nowitzki in the last 3 seconds of the game, the score was tied before Nowitzki's dramatic layup. Among the players from both teams, only Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry of Dallas, and Dwyane Wade and Udonis Haslem of Miami, appeared in the 2006 series with the same team.

Both the Mavericks and Heat are making their second appearance in the NBA Finals, the first for both teams being the 2006. This Finals marks a rematch of the 2006 Finals, won by Miami in six games. And as with the 2006 Finals, American Airlines will be featured prominently in the series by virtue of owning the naming rights to both participant's home arenas. The Heat will have home-court advantage since they had a better regular-season record than the Mavericks This marks only the second time that the Eastern Conference had home court advantage during the Finals since the end of the Michael Jordan era in 1998.

YRC Worldwide Enters Stakeholder Agreements To Support Restructuring Plan.
YRC Worldwide announced it has entered into definitive agreements with key stakeholders providing for their support of a restructuring plan.
According to a release, the company reported that more than 95 percent of the senior secured lenders have now approved the restructuring documentation, as have 100 percent of the company's multi-employer pension funds, along with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and 100 percent of the lenders under the company's asset-backed securitization facility, in each case subject to the terms and conditions contained in the agreements.
"When we announced the non-binding agreement in principle in February, we noted that our primary objective was to achieve a comprehensive restructuring with a solid foundation for long-term success," said John Lamar, chief restructuring officer and lead director of YRC Worldwide. "With these agreements, we believe that foundation is now in place, and we remain on target to close the restructuring in July."
Officials noted that the restructuring plan set out in the definitive agreements anticipates an infusion of $100 million in new capital, as well as increased liquidity from a new asset-based loan facility, replacing the current ABS facility. In addition, the restructuring plan contemplates that a portion of the company's existing loans and other obligations will be exchanged for new securities, including the exchange of some obligations for equity. This is expected to be accomplished by a series of transactions to be completed in July, and would result in the company's existing shareholders holding approximately 2.5 percent of the company's outstanding common stock, subject to further dilution by a management incentive plan and the conversion of certain new securities.
"We sincerely appreciate the support given to YRC Worldwide from our lenders, the pension funds and the Teamsters," added Lamar. "With our stakeholders having shown their confidence in the company by executing these definitive agreements we look forward to completing the restructuring as we have previously announced."
YRC Worldwide will hold a conference call for the investment community on Friday, May 6, beginning at 9:30am ET, 8:30am CT. First quarter earnings will be released the same day, Friday, May 6, prior to the opening of the market. The call will be open to listeners live and by recorded playback via the YRC Worldwide Internet site yrcw.com.
YRC Worldwide is a provider of transportation and global logistics services.

All BlackBerry services to continue: TRA.
Summary: The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) confirmed in a statement the continuation of all BlackBerry services in the UAE to both individuals and to business customers.
It added that any confusion to TRA regulations would be clarified by the TRA with the operators concerned this week.
The "confusion" mostly refers to accessing the highly secure services offered by BlackBerry. In a statement released to media and its two operators, etisalat and du, TRA said only businesses with 20 or more subscriptions will be allowed to use high security accounts on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES), which allows for services such as highly secure corporate e-mail.
Smaller businesses have the option of buying additional BES accounts, which could be quite a financial burden. Both individual users and small companies will still be able to use the ordinary, less secure BlackBerry Internet and e-mail services.
BES is the computer where customers receive highly secure e-mails encrypted by the Canadian-based BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM), from a BlackBerry device.
Last year, the TRA had threatened to suspend BlackBerry Messenger, e-mail and Web browser services unless RIM worked out a way to locate its encrypted computer servers in the UAE.
No TRA spokesperson was available to comment on why the restrictions are now being imposed. According to media reports, they will come into effect on May 1. Etisalat is already sending out e-mails to its corporate customers regarding the new restrictions and offering sales of extra BES lines.

Online ad wardens probe misplacement offenders.
The Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) and ad network body IASH have launched an investigation into ad exchanges after Yahoo!-owned exchange Right Media was implicated in ad misplacement.
Both bodies are in talks with ad exchanges with a view to bringing them under tighter regulation. They have demanded exchanges become IASH compliant in a bid to ensure ad misplacement doesn't continue.
The investigation comes as NMA has discovered more brand ads on extreme sites, with ads from easyCar and T-Mobile being served on explosivefightvideos.com.
James Aitken, chairman of IASH, said, "Because ad exchanges are part of the buying process they need to be vetted. We're talking to all the ad exchanges in the UK." Guy Phillipson, CEO of the IAB, said, "We're discussing how exchanges can become IASH compliant so when an agency buys inventory it knows it has been checked."
The move follows reports in NMA last week that blue-chip brands like ING Direct, Orange and Virgin Media were unknowingly advertising alongside and pornography ads and fighting content on Onlyfights.com.
IASH has launched an investigation with the ABCE into the affair.
NMA can reveal that Right Media, one of the biggest ad exchanges in the UK, has been implicated.
Roger Williams, director of international marketing at Right Media, said, "When content is inadvertently miscategorised by a member of the exchange, we help our members communicate to correct the situation. We have rigorous standards and guidelines for our members."
Trade bodies the IPA and ISBA, which represents more than 400 major advertisers, have expressed concern over the issue.
Nigel Gwilliam, head of digital at the IPA, said, "This is an infrequent but damaging issue. We need to establish what happened and which organisation is responsible."
Michelle Sherlock, media and ad manager at ISBA, said "Advertisers need assurances that their brands will not be compromised."

Association for Neurologically Impaired Brain Injured Children and Goldman Sachs Community TeamWorks team up for a day of Gardening.
NEW YORK -- Goldman, Sachs & Co. and the Association for Neurologically Impaired Brain Injured Children (ANIBIC) will team up for a day of gardening and beautification Friday, May 11th at Mason Residence, a facility owned and run by ANIBIC in Oakland Gardens, Queens. As part of the firm's Community TeamWorks program, Goldman Sachs employees will volunteer their time to leave their business suits behind for a day of physical labor to help beautify the landscape of the residence. Through the Community TeamWorks, Goldman Sachs is sponsoring the cost of the renovations and providing much needed manpower. Nine volunteers from the firm will work along side ANIBIC staff and clients to plant shrubbery and flowers, lay sod and create an ornamental walkway.
"We are happy to have the support of Goldman Sachs and its employees," said Gerard Smith, Executive Director of ANIBIC. "Non-profits operate on very tight budgets and we welcome the generosity of individuals and the business community to help us supply services and amenities to our clients. This sort of collaboration between business and the not-for-profit community is an example of what makes this city great."
Neil Kaufman, Vice President at Goldman Sachs, is the team captain for the day's efforts. ANIBIC was brought to the attention of the firm by Neil through a program that allows employees to take a leadership role by designing a volunteer project of their choice that best reflects their interest and commitment to a nonprofit organization serving the community and/or a population in need.
"It's outstanding that our firm provides us with the opportunity to give something back to the community," said Kaufman. "We are delighted to help a nonprofit organization like ANIBIC that has such an excellent reputation for supplying high quality services to children with disabilities."
About ANIBIC
In 1958, a group of parents gathered to plan how to best advocate and obtain educational programs for their developmentally disabled children. Together they formed ANIBIC, and their advocacy was instrumental to the formation of the Special Education Programs that currently exist in the New York City public school system. Today, the organization serves the needs of developmentally disabled children, youth, young adults and their families with a range of services. Since 1990, ANIBIC has run Individual Residential Alternatives that offer developmentally disabled individuals the option of residing in their community while maintaining a great degree of independence and receiving necessary programmatic support.
About Goldman Sachs Community TeamWorks
Community TeamWorks (CTW) is Goldman Sachs' signature volunteer program that allows each employee one day away from work to volunteer on a team-based project with a nonprofit organization. Since 1997, CTW has offered innovative volunteering opportunities worldwide that make a tangible difference in our communities and that foster inter- and intra-divisional camaraderie within the firm. In 2006, over 18,000 Goldman Sachs employees, families and friends partnered with 619 nonprofit organizations in 1,422 volunteer projects, including working with the elderly, building homes, mentoring youth, and preserving and restoring the beauty of our environment.

Buy, sell, make profit is the Hutch way.
Byline: Rashmi Pratap
Dec. 18--MUMBAI, India -- Buying and selling businesses is not alien to Hutchison Whampoa, headed by billionaire Li Ka Shing. With a history of sell outs, Hutchison may well sell its most lucrative telecom business in emerging markets, Hutchison Essar (HEL), despite repeated denials and "no comments" to the media.
The group sells a business as and when it gets good value. This time around, there are multiple reasons supporting a possible sale: Telecom valuations are currently high (with HEL being valued at nearly $14 billion), the group needs money to repay debts and Hutchison Telecommunications International (HTIL), which holds 67 percent in HEL, has failed to take public its Indian arm.
Hutchison Whampoa, with interests in ports, real estate, retail, telecom and energy and infrastructure, is facing difficulties in the businesses. Its 3G (third generation) mobile business in Europe, called 3, is being eyed by all the biggies, including France Telecom's Orange and UK-based telecom giant Vodafone.
3 Group has struggled to make profit since its inception and subscriber growth is slow. It is a cause of concern for the company and one of the factors responsible for negative outlook on Hutchison Whampoa by credit rating agencies. Hutchison has scrapped plans for an IPO for 3 Italia, a 3G operator in Italy, despite making a preliminary filing for IPO.
In India, the group's joint venture partner, Essar, has been giving it a tough time. Essar first objected to the purchase of stake in HTIL by Egypt's Orascom and then had differences over the sale of BPL Mobile (BPL's Mumbai operations). The matter was referred to arbitration by the Bombay High Court in August this year.
To add to the woes of the group, there are issues within the family, with differences emerging between scion Richard Li and his father. Richard's attempts at selling PCCW, which offers phone, broadband TV and internet services and is Hong Kong's largest fixed-line phone operator, failed after it was discovered that the buyer Francis Leung was backed by father Ka Shing. Richard said he would be "very happy" if shareholders rejected Leung's offer because he was "very dissatisfied" with his father's involvement.
PCCW's stock has plunged 95 percent from its peak in 2000 and since July, Richard has tried to sell his company's assets to Australia's Macquarie Bank and private equity firm Newbridge Capital. He also tried to sell his controlling stake in the company to a Hong Kong investment banker.
Among the list of major deals by Hutchison is that of Star TV. In 1991, Richard Li launched Star TV and in 1995, when Star was losing money, he sold it to media czar Rupert Murdoch for about $950 million.
In April this year, Hutchison Whampoa inked an agreement to sell 20 percent of its port business, Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) to Singapore's PSA International for a cash consideration of $4,388 million. This was despite ports being a core business for Hutchison, which controls 12 percent of all container port capacity in the world. The money was supposed to be used for "working purposes".
Earlier this year, Standard & Poor's continued its negative rating on Hutchison Whampoa. It said, "In 2005, the company increased investment in retail and property and reduced its controlling ownership interest in well-established assets, such as Hong Kong ports and Australian utility businesses.
While assets sales provide cash flow to support debt reduction, the sell-down of high-quality businesses may also reduce recurring cash flows and increase consolidated business risk."

Low-carb diets prove difficult.(abstracts)(Brief Article)
Despite personal stories touting the effectiveness of low-carb diets, in practice, 50% fewer dieters reach their weight-loss goals on low-carb diets compared to all weight-loss diets in general. In a report from The Hartman Group, The Vanishing Potato: Understanding the World of low-Carb Dieting from a Consumer Perspective, 14% of low-carb dieters noted they quit the diet because they reached their weight-loss goal, compared to 29% of all weight-loss dieters who quit their diet because they had reached their goal. One reason was because of the difficulty of maintaining a low-carb regimen. Some 52% of those who quit a low-carb diet did so because "it was too hard to maintain." This compares to 26% of those who quit all weight-loss diets for that same reason.
"Our research has shown, time and again, that true marketplace change is consumer driven," said the founder, chairman and CEO of The Hartman Group, Harvey Hartman. "'For that reason, it is imperative that the food and beverage industry understand the true consumer behavior that underlies the hype that so often accompanies consumer trends. The low-carb phenomenon is no exception, as our findings indicate."
The Internet survey was conducted in April 2004. A sample of 1,329 adults (18 and older) was drawn from The Hartman Group's online panel of consumers. The Hartman Group, Blanca Hernandez, 425-452-0818, www.hartman-group.com/products/studylowcarb.html
Street Chatter From SIR Highlights the Following Stocks: Albertson's, Merck, and Millennium Pharmaceuticals.
Business Editors
CINCINNATI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 12, 2004
Today's "Street Chatter" from SIR focuses on: Albertson's (NYSE:ABS), Merck (NYSE:MRK), and Millennium Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq:MLNM). "Street Chatter" is a report that focuses on three stocks that are generating a lot of attention on Internet message boards. "Street Chatter" is published on www.SchaeffersResearch.com - the home of Bernie Schaeffer and Schaeffer's Investment Research. For additional information about this report or to have it delivered to you free via email every day click on the following link: http://www.schaeffersresearch.com/addinfo .
Street Chatter:
1. Grocery-store name Albertson's (NYSE:ABS), along with some of its rivals, are appearing throughout the financial newswires today. It came to the attention of the press that four days of secret, informal meetings between Southern California grocery workers and the major grocery chains resulted in little-to-no progress toward ending the strike that has been in place for the past three months. ABS shares, which had been on their way higher for the past month, pressing above their September peak, have today dropped almost two percent, breaching the 10-day moving average in the process. On Friday, options players were atypically busy at the January 20 call, resulting in a massive liquidation of bullish positions at this strike. The equity's Schaeffer's put/call open interest ratio (SOIR) subsequently rose from 0.72, in the 15th percentile, on Friday to today's reading of 0.90, in the 35th annual percentile. The short-interest ratio on ABS is currently hefty at nearly 20 days to cover, with almost 11.5 million ABS shares sold short, about six percent of the public float.
Click the following link to see the Daily Chart of ABS Since August 2003 With 10-Day and 20-Day Moving Averages: http://www.schaeffersresearch.com/wire?ID=9241 .
2. Merck (NYSE:MRK) is sliding lower today after CSFB downgraded its rating on the pharmaceutical behemoth to an "underperform" from a "neutral." The analyst said Merck's 2004 earnings-per-share guidance ($3.11 to $3.17) may be a bit optimistic, leaving the company prone to disappointing the Street. After enduring a relatively steep decline that began in September, the stock was just beginning to regain its footing and was attempting to hurdle long-term resistance in the form of its 20-week moving average. Today's pullback has caused the stock to gap lower, violating its 10-day moving average but catching support at its 20-day trendline. The sentiment picture reflects unbridled optimism toward the stock. Schaeffer's put/call open interest ratio (SOIR) for MRK has been declining since early November and currently weighs in at 0.59, which is lower than 94 percent of the past year's worth of data. What's more, the number of shorted MRK shares dropped by 19 percent over the past reporting period to 10.7 million, a multi-year low. The resultant short-interest ratio is a paltry 0.80 days to cover, which signifies that any short-covering activity should not be a factor in the equity's near-term price action.
Click the following link to see the Daily Chart of MRK Since September 2003 With 10-Day and 20-Day Moving Averages: http://www.schaeffersresearch.com/wire?ID=9241 .
3. Earlier today, the Chief Executive Officer for Millennium Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq:MLNM) said the company is on track to exceed its earlier 2003 earnings guidance, which projected, among other results, a non-GAAP net loss of $290 million, year-end cash reserves of $800 million, and revenue of $420 million. The MLNM official also estimated breakeven earnings results by 2006 and strong Velcade sales of up to $160 million during the current year. MLNM peaked last Monday before gapping lower on news that Velcade trials would be temporarily halted. The stock has subsequently been consolidating sideways and is losing the support of its 10-day and 20-day moving averages. Schaeffer's put/call open interest ratio (SOIR) for MLNM currently stands at 0.44, which is near the midpoint of all readings taken over the year. A test on Schaeffer's Sentiment PowerTools (http://www.schaeffersresearch.com/powertoolsobs) shows that MLNM has historically underperformed its at-any-time price action following SOIR readings between 0.39 and 0.49.

Glitch Mismatches Photos, News on Google
Engineers at Google Inc. are working to resolve a problem on the company's Google News site that has resulted in some photos and news stories being mismatched.
Searches conducted on Google News on Friday occasionally returned photos from Reuters Group PLC that didn't match the stories they were listed next to, such as a shot of bunches of vegetables that appeared alongside a story about a Japanese merger firm.
Another story listed on Google News' top business stories had a Reuters photo of a guitarist next to a Wall Street Journal story about Sprint Nextel considering changes to a wireless Internet service plan.
Google's news pages are automated and use computer coding, or algorithms, to select and display stories. Google spokesman Gabriel Stricker said its algorithms appeared to be mismatching some material, but the problem appeared to be mainly with photos from Reuters.
Stricker said Google's engineers are working to solve the glitch and it wasn't clear why the problem appears to be associated with Reuters material.
A Reuters spokeswoman didn't immediately return a call for comment.
Newsweek magazine posted a story online late Thursday pointing out that last week Google News displayed photos of two monkeys next to stories about the expected departure of Dick Parsons as chief executive of Time Warner Inc.
Parsons is one of the most prominent black executives in the country, and Newsweek pointed out that "few images of racism" are as offensive to blacks as monkeys.
Stricker called the mismatches "a really unfortunate mistake, and we're working very hard to fix it."
A Time Warner spokesman declined to comment.

30SECOND GUIDE TO ... LOW VALUE CONSIGNMENT RELIEF.(News)
sounds boring
IT affects us all and is crippling some high Street retailers.
LVCR was introduced almost 30 years ago, long before the internet, to give tax breaks to retailers outside Europe selling small, low value items.
So, items like books and collectibles imported from abroad were not subject to the UK's VAT charge.
But more recently it has become something of a racket and has been legally exploited by big-name firms who have been shifting CDs and DVDs from warehouses in Jersey and Guernsey for cheaper than high Street rivals.
Seems unfair
Some might see it as evading tax while others would say they are doing nothing wrong.
But the upshot is retailers like hMV - who are dutifully paying UK taxes for their high Street stores - have been finding it hard to compete as savvy shoppers browse and buy, tax free, online. It is taking its toll.
On Wednesday hMV issued its fourth profits warning in six months and warned it is likely to breach key agreements with its banks over the terms of its loans next month.
Why do we care?
The government has hinted that in this month's Budget it will close the tax loophole saving [pounds sterling]130m in lost revenue and levelling the playing field.
